Intentions: Trying a 4-10 Work Schedule
The 4-10 Schedule
My workplace recently changed its rules about core hours, making it possible to work 4 10-hour days and take Friday off. This has the obvious benefit of giving me an extra day off to have longer blocks of time to work on personal projects, like writing and coding. Another reason to do this is that my spouse, Toad works Sunday-Thursday. If I could free up my Fridays, I'd have more time to spend with him. I have a fairly long commute, so eliminating one entire commuting day saves me two hours that I'd still need to take if I just worked a half day Friday. Since my commute is by bike, an earlier start and a later end help me avoid the worst of the summer heat.
But there are also reasons why this might not be such a good idea. I don't love working long hours. Being at work late makes it significantly harder to to meet up with friends, go to concerts, and participate in the non-work world on weekday evenings. Starting the day early means going to bed early, which also makes it harder to go out in the evenings.
Luckily, my work schedule is flexible, so I don't have to commit to doing anything.
My Intentions
I have evening plans pretty much every day this coming week, so I'm going to ease myself into it. I currently wake up at 7 and work a 9-5. Starting this week, I'll set my alarm to 6, and work to 5 on the days when I have evening plans. I've done my laundry and meal prepped, so I should be set for the week. This week, if all goes to plan, I'll only work a half day Friday. And the next week, I'll do it for real. Here goes nothing.
